The exhaust gas temperature sensor protects the Engine from overheating.
In diesel-engined cars the sensor is also responsible for the regeneration of the diesel particle filter.
The sensory unit consits of a temperature dependent resistor that is able to measure the exhuast gas temperature.
The temperature data gets transmitted to and unsed by the engine management system to increase or lower the engine power in order to alter the engine temperature.
The most common reasons for a defect of the exhaust-gas-pressure-sensor are pollution, corrosion or damaged cables.
